Chapter Two

Free fall. God, she had to have free fall. In less than twenty-four hours, it had become an obsession. Sixty seconds wouldn’t be long enough. She’d have to do it over and over again.

She was so tired of playing it safe, of looking at her bank account and wondering if she was going to make it, when she knew in her head that she would. But the heart was a different thing altogether. Maybe it wasn’t even her heart. Maybe it was just her stomach. Gut fear.

For the moment, free fall seemed like a way out. A drug addict’s way out, a momentary high. She could only hope that jumping out of a plane would somehow, some way, help her jump out of her careful, secure, and totally boring life.

The morning air raised goosebumps on her arms, though the sun was out, promising another beautiful warm, very un-February-like day. She slipped her sweatshirt over her head, then smoothed her hair. On the road, she cranked the heater to warm her toes. How cold did it get three miles above the earth? Anticipation made the forty-five-minute drive seem far too long. She wanted that headlong dive into the air more than she’d wanted anything in almost ten years.

She followed the directions she’d printed off the Internet, finding the small airport in Hollister with no difficulty. Locating Johnson Skydiving School proved more of a problem. She passed a myriad of hangars buzzing with activity, finally seeing the sign on a small trailer at the end of the lot. The sign gleamed with seemingly fresh paint, but the trailer had definitely seen better days.

Since she was taking her life in her hands, maybe she should have picked one of the larger enterprises, but there’d been something about Cole Johnson’s site, something about the man who’d written the Q&A. She’d stopped long enough to read the answer to a question about the outcome if the main and reserve parachute didn’t open—which was a really stupid place to stop, considering—but instead of freaking out, she’d laughed when she read, “If that happens, I guess both of us are going to have a really bad day.” He’d gone on to stress safety, proper maintenance, et cetera. Of course, he’d listed his qualifications. They’d seemed impressive enough, to someone who didn’t know diddly-squat.

Somehow, she just knew the man on the phone, Cole Johnson himself, had written that quip. Even odder, she trusted him, though God only knew why. He’d certainly asked her enough personal questions to terrify any ordinary woman, but then, suffering from the affects of obsession and excessive boredom, she didn’t consider herself ordinary at this point. Besides, everything he’d asked made sense. But that weight thing...

She parked her car to the side of the trailer, then locked her purse in the trunk. Her car key and lipstick bulged in her back pocket. Since he’d already taken her credit card number, she didn’t need anything else.

Except her courage, but who really needed courage when
